The Chinese have learned to mine on SSD. But it is not very profitable
The drive quickly deteriorates, but saves energy
Despite the volatility of the bitcoin rate, its value again returned to the $ 60,000 mark, which has a positive effect on the entire cryptocurrency market. Against this background, Chinese miners have found a way to mine some coins using solid state drives.
Mining Chia, a cryptocurrency from BitTorrent creator Bram Cohen, requires heavy use of the hard drive. For acceleration, you can use the SSD as a temporary storage location for the graph file. However, the lifespan of such a drive will be seriously reduced, since the number of operations per minute performed with data will be simply off scale.
On Reddit, users share their Chia mining farms, usually they look like this: processor - Ryzen R9 3960X , 256 GB of RAM, disk for system storage - Samsung 980 Pro , as well as NVMe drive for mining business with 16 TB. A 1000 watt unit is used to power this. However, this is still much less power than is required for a classic farm with a bunch of video cards.
So far, Chia mining remains a niche entertainment, so a shortage of solid state drives is not expected in the near future. But once the market gets bigger, consumer SSDs may be in the same situation as video cards now.
